Taming is the flagship skill of Primal Idle — the art of capturing wild prehistoric Creatures and bringing them home to your Stable. Every companion, expedition party member, and breeding parent starts as a wild creature you tamed. Taming levels also unlock Breeding (level 50) and the expedition party — one slot from level 10, growing by one every 20 levels to a cap of five by level 80.
How taming works
[edit | edit source]Taming is an action-based skill, like the gathering skills. Each species has its own taming action that you start and leave running; when the timer completes, the food and tranquilizer are consumed and the newly tamed creature is delivered to your Stable.
Each taming attempt requires:
- Taming level — every species has a level requirement, from 1 (Glyptodon) up to 99 (Yutyrannus). Higher-level creatures unlock as you gain Taming XP.
- A base timer — the time one attempt takes, from about 1 minute for the easiest tames up to 11 minutes for the hardest. Timers can be shortened by Taming speed companions (Titanoboa +10%, Hatzegopteryx +20%, Yutyrannus +25%).
- Food — a stack of a specific cooked or gathered food the creature will accept (for example Crimson Berries, Roasted Meat, or a Sturgeon Feast). Stronger creatures want more, and better, food.
- A tranquilizer — a calming item to subdue the creature. There are three tiers of increasing potency:
- Calming Tonic — the weakest, for the earliest tames.
- Tranquilizer Brew — mid-tier.
- Potent Tranquilizer — for the toughest, high-level creatures.
You earn Taming XP each time an attempt completes. XP awards scale up with the difficulty of the creature, from 33 XP for a Glyptodon to 6,417 XP for a Yutyrannus.
Biome gating
[edit | edit source]The starter Grasslands species can be tamed from the very beginning. Every other creature is locked to one of the other nine Biomes, and you can only tame there once you have unlocked that biome by defeating its guardian on Expeditions. In other words: explore and clear a biome first, then its native creatures become available to tame (provided you also meet the Taming level requirement).
Where tamed creatures go
[edit | edit source]A completed tame is delivered straight to your Stable. The Stable has limited capacity (it grows with your Taming level and Stable upgrades), so keep an eye on free slots. From the Stable you can:
- Assign a creature as an active companion for its buffed skill (see Creatures and Companions).
- Add it to an expedition party.
- Pair it with another of the same species for Breeding.
- Release it if you no longer need it (any equipped Dino Gear returns to your bank first).
A freshly tamed creature has randomly rolled stats within its species' ranges, so taming multiples of a species and keeping the best roll is a valid strategy — and the foundation of the Breeding endgame.
Player-facing steps
[edit | edit source]- Reach the required Taming level for the creature you want.
- If the creature is not a Grasslands native, unlock its biome by clearing that biome's guardian on Expeditions.
- Stock your bank with the required food and tranquilizer (cook or gather/brew them in advance).
- Make sure you have a free Stable slot.
- Start the creature's taming action and wait for the timer. When it completes, the ingredients are spent and the creature joins your Stable.
Taming tips
[edit | edit source]- Tame a Taming-speed companion early (Titanoboa, then Hatzegopteryx) to speed up every subsequent tame — Yutyrannus (Taming 99) is the strongest of the three once you can field it.
- Because stats roll randomly, tame extras of key species and keep the best individual to breed from.
- Batch-prepare tranquilizers and food — high-level tames burn through multiple Potent Tranquilizers per attempt.
Kibble and premium tames
[edit | edit source]Kibble is premium taming food. Most stabled creatures lay eggs passively (see Breeding); those eggs are cooked into six tiers of kibble — Plain, Savory, Hearty, Rich, Pristine and Primal — each matched to a tame-level band. Feeding a tame its matching kibble makes the attempt faster and the result better: stronger starting stats, more Taming XP, and a shorter tame. It is the food behind perfect-quality tames.
XP from the whole stable
[edit | edit source]Taming XP no longer comes from taming alone. Raising and using your creatures now feeds the skill:
- Breeding a clutch pays the species' full tame XP.
- Imprint care and graduation each pay half — a full imprint cycle is worth about 3× a tame.
- Dispatch missions and veteran level-ups both grant Taming XP.
Even so, Taming remains the longest grind in the game: a fresh skill runs roughly 420–490 hours to level 99. The rework added three new species — Moschops (Taming 25), Basilosaurus (93) and Yutyrannus (99) — plus thirteen repeatable Train drills (below).
Train drills
[edit | edit source]Train actions are repeatable Taming actions that put a stabled creature through its paces. They cost cooked food only — no tranquilizer, no Bank stall, and they produce no item — and they exist to turn a stocked larder into Taming XP. From Taming 45 up they are the backbone of the skill's XP ladder.
| Drill | Taming level | Food cost | Time (s) | XP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Train Beelzebufo | 45 | Cooked Minnow×3 | 240 | 547 |
| Train Megaloceros | 50 | Berry Skewer×3 | 270 | 750 |
| Train Dire Wolf | 55 | Roasted Meat×4 | 300 | 958 |
| Train Cave Bear | 60 | Lungfish Stew×2 | 330 | 1,192 |
| Train Forge Salamander | 65 | Lungfish Stew×3 | 360 | 1,500 |
| Train Woolly Rhino | 70 | Glazed Coelacanth×3 | 420 | 2,018 |
| Train Smilodon | 75 | Glazed Coelacanth×4 | 450 | 2,488 |
| Train Spinosaurus | 80 | Glazed Coelacanth×5 | 500 | 3,194 |
| Train Hatzegopteryx | 85 | Sturgeon Feast×3 | 560 | 4,091 |
| Train Quetzalcoatlus | 90 | Sturgeon Feast×4 | 600 | 4,717 |
| Train Basilosaurus | 94 | Sturgeon Feast×5 | 620 | 5,340 |
| Train Giganotosaurus | 97 | Sturgeon Feast×6 | 600 | 5,550 |
| Train Yutyrannus | 99 | Sturgeon Feast×6 | 660 | 6,417 |
Because the food is the only input, the practical ceiling on training is how fast you can fish and cook — Glazed Coelacanth and Sturgeon Feast carry the top half of the ladder.
